Programme Objectives (POs) of M.A. Arabic :

The M.A Arabic Programme is divided into four Semesters. To make students aquatinted with all periods shades and styles of Arabic literature and language. The literature is taught period wise such as classical and modern literature etc. Further in consultation with students and guardians; job oriented courses like translation, communicative skills and computers etc. are also introduced. A Part from this IDC are also offered in II and IV semesters.


Further it also helps to understand the standard of Arabic language in different periods. History of Arabic literatures is also included in M.A programme; so that the students may become aware of the literary changes occurred in various stages. An especial emphasis has been given to the translation and communicative skills. So that students may become capable of different texts on political and economic topics. In this way emphasis has been given to make the programme job oriented. Interdisciplinary courses have also been included in two semesters to make students of other disciplines familiar with the Arabic language as well as Arab Culture and Civilization. On the whole the programme has been designed in such a way that the stack holders may have vast knowledge about Arabic language, literature, culture and civilization.

Programme Objectives (POs) of M.A. Buddhist Studies:

To prepare experts on Buddhism who would excel in knowledge, orientation, and application of Buddhist thought of peace and non-violence with high ethical standards and social relevance. Keeping pace with the disciplinary advances, the programme would address learning about ethical, psychological, historical, philosophical, economic, trans-national, cultural, and linguistic functioning at individual, social, national and international level. It would facilitate acquisition of specialized knowledge in Buddhist History, Philosophy, and Literature available in Pāli, Sanskrit, Chinese, and Tibetan languages and their literature. The course shall also facilitate inculcation of relevant attitude, values, and a sense of empowerment. It recognizes multiplicity in ways and means of knowledge-creation and its application. To this end, the students will be familiarized with plurality in perspectives, pedagogy, and their implication. The course shall allow students in specialized domains of Buddhist Studies, along with quest for personal growth and citizenship.

The Department holds a provision for the inclusion of new courses and modification of the present ones during a given academic year. In the preparation of the courses element of inter-disciplinary approach has been kept in view and embedded in the courses. Reading material will be made available by the concerned faculty.

  1. To create strong research oriented theoretical foundation in consonance with the recent advances in the discipline of Buddhist Studies.
  2. To enable students to take a creative, empirical and ethical approach to the programme that combines conceptual, representative and research practices in both quantitative and qualitative tradition.
  3. To provide an opportunity to extend the knowledge base and practice with a view to promote healthy interface between academic and society.

Programme Objectives (POs) of M.A. English:

The English programme is a two-year course divided into four-semesters. A student is required to complete 80 credits (i.e. 2 Core and 2 Elective Courses in each of the four semesters) for the completion of course and the award of degree. However, if the student wishes so, she can opt for an Open Elective Course in the Second and/or the fourth semesters for acquiring additional credits.

It prepares students for academic careers in Spanish as well as for a wide range of other careers in the field of translation, tourism, among other things. The compulsory dissertation at the end of the programme trains students in academic writing and lays the foundation for independent research work making them eligible for pursuing research programmes.

  1. to educate the students in the philosophy of librarianship, basic principles, fundamental laws, professional ethics;
  2. to train the students in the skills of information, knowledge processing, organization and retrieval;
  3. to train the students in the management of Library and Information Centres;
  4. to enable the students to understand and appreciate the functions and purpose of Library & Information Centres in the changing social, cultural, technological and economic environment;
  5. to provide the basic knowledge of computer and its application in Library and Information activities; and
  6. to give the students an understanding of the basics of Information Science.

Programme Objectives (POs) of M.A. Linguistics:

Students with degrees from the Faculties of Sciences, Social Sciences, and Mathematical Sciences, as well as other disciplines within the Humanities, are admitted into the M.A. Linguistics programme. Some of the characteristic attributes of a postgraduate in Linguistics may include the following:

  1. Disciplinary knowledge and skills: (i) Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of major concepts, theoretical principles and experimental findings in Linguistics and its different subfields (Phonetics, Phonology, Morphology, Syntax, Semantics, Sociolinguistics, Psycholinguistics and Historical Linguistics/Language Change), and other related fields of study, including broader interdisciplinary subfields such as Philosophy, Psychology and Social Sciences and (ii) ability to use modern instrumentation for Linguistic analysis and description.
  2. Skilled communicator: Ability to transmit complex technical information relating to Linguistics in a clear and concise manner in written and oral communication.
  3. Critical thinker and problem solver: Ability to employ critical thinking and efficient problem-solving skills in the four core analytical areas of Linguistics (Phonetics, Phonology, Morphology and Syntax).
  4. Sense of enquiry: Capability in asking relevant questions relating to issues and problems in the field of Linguistics, and planning, executing and reporting the results of an experiment or investigation.
  5. Team player/worker: Capability in working effectively in diverse teams in both classroom and field-based situations.
  6. Skilled project manager: Capability in identifying and mobilising the appropriate resources required for a project, managing a project through to completion, and observing responsible and ethical scientific practices.
  7. Digitally literate: Capability in the use of computers for data organisation and computation, appropriate software for data analysis, and modern library search tools to locate, retrieve, and evaluate language-related information.
  8. Ethical awareness/reasoning: Avoidance of unethical behaviour such as plagiarism and fabrication, falsification or misrepresentation of data, as well as sensitivity to environmental and sustainability issues.
  9. Lifelong learners: Capacity for self-paced and self-directed learning aimed at personal development, improving knowledge, and reskilling.

Programme Objectives (POs) of M.A. Bengali:

This programme aims at training students in Bengali Literary studies in a way so that they can pursue further research in the field. There are papers on the basic concepts of literary studies and trends in literary theory to provide an understanding of the conceptual points of departure in literary studies. One paper on socio-political background of Bengali literature and Units on such background in individual papers are expected to provide knowledge on how to situate literary production in the larger context of socio-political history. Papers on texts from various phases and genres of Bengali literature will introduce the student to the salient features of respective phases, features of respective genres and contribution of individual authors. Further, these courses will help in understanding various ways of reading literary texts. Understanding of the idea of research will be nurtured through the course on Research Methodology and guided dissertation writing. Elective and Open Elective courses will initiate the student in a selected area providing indepth and comprehensive understanding of that area forming the base for formulating research questions and pursuing research in that area.
