2022 - The Centenary Year
This year is a landmark year in the historical journey of the University of Delhi. On the 1st of May in the year 1922, the University was founded with three colleges, namely St. Stephens College, Ramjas College and Hindu College and comprised 750 students. And now, a century later, the University has expanded to include 90 Colleges, 16 Faculties and 86 Academic Departments, spread over 407 acres across Delhi and with a student strength of more than 7 lakhs. Indeed, in its composition and ethos, the university aptly represents a microcosm of the spectacular diversity of India. It is a matter of great pride for us that over the last one hundred years of its glorious presence, the University has charted a distinguished path to emerge as an institution of great eminence, both nationally and internationally. All its constituent members take great pride in its rich legacy, which dates back to the pre-independence times and which also witnessed its engagement with the national movement. From then to now, the University has moved from strength to strength to establish exemplary landmarks in all domains, including academics, research, extra-curricular engagement and social outreach.
Students and research scholars have always been considered the university's core stakeholders. Placed in such momentous times, we feel very happy to note that all those of you who choose to seek admission to one or the other courses at the university will not only get to become a part of one of the most distinguished institutions of higher learning in the country but will also acquire the privilege of being present on the most historic occasion of its Centenary. You are indeed fortunate that you will be that special Centenary batch that will get an opportunity to share in and play a meaningful role in the rollout of the Centenary celebrations, which have been planned as yearlong programs and initiatives, beginning on the Centenary Foundation Day of 1st May 2022 and culminating with the Foundation Day of 2023. In this context, you will be pleased to know that the Centenary Logo for the yearlong celebration has also been selected from the entries received through an open competition held for university students. Ms. Kratika Khinchi, a second-year student of Gargi College, is the creator of the Centenary Logo.
The yearlong celebrations shall see the organization of multifarious programs at the university, department and college levels. These will include programs of institutional social responsibility like community outreach initiatives and plantation work, among others; programs of academic engagement like seminars, conferences, workshops and lecture series; cultural events in myriad realms; sports competitions and events; book fairs; exhibition of rare books and manuscripts; organization of seminars, conferences, workshops and lecture series; initiatives in the domain of research & development; green initiatives; innovative practices and a plethora of student-centric activities.
